Packaging Policy

Packaging Policy

This policy has been updated in February 2025.

My new ethics centre around 'local' and 'minimal' packaging - and also being the second or third owner of these packaging materials.

I have done a lot of thinking in regards to our Earth, environment and us, as humans. I've listened to what my sons are saying - their fears for the future for themselves, their livelihoods and their world. We've had bushfires, floods, a pandemic, terrorism, climate change - these younger generation are living in a world of fear and uncertainty. I need to show them we can all change, whether it's privately or in business, and that I care about our world and its future.

I have been making changes to our packaging, as you may have noticed. Our stock-standard packaging is a brown paper bag/s, two business cards that are printed locally and a plastic bag (depending on what I can find, this bag may be reusable, recyclable or compostable). The tape I use is from Bunnings and I have tried to use the paper tape, but it won't stick to the plastic bags very well. I will continue to research the best tape for both material and environmental requirements. I have to use plastic to ensure your order arrives free of water/general damage that can happen during transit.

I have started to source all packaging materials secondhand. I will no longer be ordering from businesses in Australia (apart from the cards, as I have no other way of printing them here - but they are printed within a five minute drive from the studio).

The Australia Post satchels I use are LDPE - low density polyethylene. These satchels take up to 24 months to biodegrade. I have been told Australia Post is looking into fully recyclable/compostable satchels in the near future, whether paper or plant based and I am hopeful something will be released in early 2025. Unfortunately the biodegradable satchels I have tested that are currently sold on the Australian market are far too flimsy, in my opinion - I need satchels that can withstand any duress after it leaves me and before it reaches you. I'll continue to research better satchel options as they come available.

I'll be sure to update this Packaging Policy as I adjust to new materials.
